The basics
What is PlayNook?
PlayNook is an audio-first tech media company that creates AudioGames: interactive, immersive audio adventures that turn sound from something you listen to into something you play. Think of a gamebook rebuilt for your ears, where you choose your own adventure through sound.
What is an AudioGame?
An interactive audiobook. Voice actors, original soundtracks and sound design tell the story, and you decide where it goes. Every choice has consequences, and there is more than one ending waiting for you.
Is PlayNook free?
The app is free to download and you'll find free AudioGames to start with. Other AudioGames and episodes can be unlocked with in-app purchases. Prices are shown in the app.
Where can I play?
On iOS (App Store) and Android (Google Play). With headphones for full immersion, on speakers to play with friends, in the car via Bluetooth, or straight from your phone.
Do I need an internet connection?
No. Download an AudioGame and play it offline: on a plane, on a train, in the middle of a forest.
How to play
How do choices work?
Choices come in different flavors. Standard choices, timed choices where you have to decide before the clock runs out, and conditional choices that only appear if you have the right stats, items or past decisions. Some moments are left to chance, with a virtual D20 dice roll.
Can I play with my voice?
Yes. Turn on Use microphone in the settings and you can make choices and roll the dice by speaking.
What are story points, stats and items?
Every AudioGame keeps track of your journey: story points, health and other stats, the items in your inventory, the badges you earn and a journal of what you've discovered. What you collect and how you behave can open, or close, entire paths.
What happens if I lose?
Not every road ends well. That's the point. Checkpoints let you pick up from key moments and try a different path.
How long is an AudioGame?
Each AudioGame shows its duration, complexity and level of interactivity before you start, so you can pick a quick story for your commute or a long adventure for a quiet evening.
What kind of stories can I play?
Fantasy, horror and cosmic horror, sci-fi, mystery and thriller, comedy, romance, historical adventures, fairy tales, Christmas stories, and stories for kids and families. Plus licensed worlds with partners such as Winx Club and The Raccoons.
Settings and accessibility
Can blind and visually impaired players use PlayNook?
Yes, accessibility is where PlayNook started. Turn on Read description for accessibility and the app describes interactions and transitions out loud. You can also play with your voice and let the story flow with Auto progress.
What can I change in the settings?
You can adjust:
Text size
Read description for accessibility
Auto progress, so the story moves on by itself
Use microphone, to play with voice commands
Dubbing speed, to choose how fast the voices speak
Is there a guide?
Yes. The app includes a guide that explains everything: choices, dice rolls, stats, items, badges, journal and settings.

Go to Profile, tap Promo code, enter your code and tap Redeem.
Creators
I'm a creator. Can I publish on PlayNook?
Yes. Writers, game designers, narrators and indie studios can create and publish their own AudioGames with Questly, our creator tool. Everything you need is in the For Creators section.
